Death toll from earthquake in Indonesia rises to 38

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake in the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara killed 38 people. This was announced on August 15 by Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

"There are 38 dead, two people seriously injured and 11 minor injuries," the BNPB head said at a press conference. Suharyanto is an Indonesian TV channel Kompas TV.

About 2 thousand residents of Nagekeo County left their homes on their own and evacuated. The earthquake occurred at 04:58 local time (01:48 Moscow time). The epicenter was located in the sea about 38 km northeast of the city of Mbai at a depth of 15 km.

After the tremors, a tsunami warning was in effect. However, no significant sea level rise was recorded in the affected areas, and the warning was later canceled. According to preliminary data, residential buildings, a warehouse and public infrastructure facilities were damaged.

Shopping malls, casinos and universities were closed in several megacities, but the disaster did not affect the interest of tourists in the region.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.7 occurred on August 14 off the coast of the Indonesian island of Flores, 162 km from the city of Labuan Bajo, where about 188 thousand people live. According to the Jakarta Globe portal, the village of Nanu was severely damaged and partially collapsed. On August 15, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) clarified to Izvestia that there had been no complaints from Russian tourists in Indonesia.
