The Russian Interior Ministry has recommended that Russians use biometrics instead of SMS codes to protect bank accounts from fraudsters. This was reported to TASS on August 15 in the press center of the department.

"If a citizen decides to keep money in a bank account, in order to minimize the risks of theft, it is necessary <...> [including] the use of biometrics," the Interior Ministry said.

The department explained that if there is a technical capability with a high level of protection, it is recommended to use two-factor authentication with biometrics, abandoning SMS codes — the latter, as noted in the department, are vulnerable to interception.

Vladimir Vasenin, head of the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in Moscow, said on August 14 that remote scammers began using a scheme to block Apple devices, posing as employers and offering to install corporate equipment or office applications. Vasenin urged users not to enter other people's account information on their devices and to be attentive to suggestions to install third-party programs or change phone settings.
