The State Duma warned about a new fraud scheme with a "security application"

Scammers convince Russians to install a supposedly secure application, with which they will gain access to personal data. This was announced on August 11 by Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, federal coordinator of the Digital Russia project of the United Russia party.

"A new fraud scheme has emerged in which attackers pose as technicians from well-known IT companies and offer to install a so—called "security application" on the device," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to the parliamentarian, the victim is informed of a non-existent hacking threat or suspicious activity, after which they are urgently required to download a program for "protection". Scammers use professional terms and create an atmosphere of panic. The installed application gives fraudsters full access to correspondence and other confidential data.

Nemkin stressed that any proposals to install the application on the initiative of unknown persons should automatically be regarded as fraud.
