Alexandrova beat world number one Arina Sobolenko at the WTA tournament
Russian tennis player Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated world number one Arina Sobolenko from Belarus in the fourth round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto. The meeting ended on August 9 with a score 7:6 (7:3), 4:6, 6:4 and it lasted 2 hours and 29 minutes.
Alexandrova won the fifth match out of ten against Sobolenko at the WTA tournaments. The victory allowed the Russian to reach the quarterfinals of the competition in Toronto for the first time in her career.
In the decisive set, the athlete lost after an early break, but was able to turn the tide of the game. With the score 4:2, the Russian again gave up her serve, but in the final game she took Sobolenko's serve and converted the third matchball.
Alexandrova's victory over Sobolenko was the third in her career over the current world number one. Previously, the Russian beat Iga Schwentek at a tournament in Miami in 2024 and Sobolenko in Doha in 2025.
As noted by Sport-Express, the victory in Toronto is especially important for Alexandrova against the background of her results this season. Before the start of the tournament, the Russian was only ranked 40th in the championship race.
For Sobolenko, the defeat was another unfortunate result of recent months. After moving to the ground, the Belarusian reached the semifinals only once, in Berlin. She lost to Diana Schneider in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, and finished in the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Alexandrova will now play in the quarterfinals of the Toronto tournament with Ukrainian Elina Svitolina. For the Russian, this is the sixth quarterfinal at the WTA 1000 tournaments and the first since the competition in Doha in 2025.
Russian tennis player Kristina Lyutova won the Women's Tennis Association 250 tournament in Memphis on August 2. In the decisive match, the 16-year-old Russian, ranked 229th in the world ranking, won a strong-willed victory over the Czech representative Daria Vidmanova with a score of 1:6, 6:1, 6:3.
