Zhurova pointed to the growing popularity of amateur sports among Russians

Amateur sports in Russia have become truly widespread due to the implementation of national projects and the general development of the relevant infrastructure. This was announced on August 8, on the Day of the Physical Education Student, by the deputy of the State Duma (DG), Olympic champion Svetlana Zhurova.

"Amateur sports have become truly widespread in Russia, including thanks to national projects. The Demography project played a big role, which includes the development of sports and the construction of sports facilities for mass and children's sports," she told RIA Novosti.

According to the MP, a project called "You're in the game" also played an important role in attracting people to sports. She noted that within its framework, participants independently develop sports initiatives in their regions, find funding and offer ideas that are in demand in their native land.

Zhurova stressed that at the same time, corporate sports, amateur leagues, marathons and street sports projects are actively developing in Russia. In her opinion, such directions help citizens to engage in physical activity more often and form the habit of regular workouts.

In addition, the Olympic champion drew attention to the growing popularity of extreme sports. She noted that the skateboarding grounds are actively visited by young people in the summer.

On the same day, Mikhail Degtyarev, the head of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, congratulated all his fellow citizens on the Day of Physical Education. According to him, this holiday unites all those who adhere to the principles of a healthy and active lifestyle, and also contributes to human development.

Physical Education Day was established by the decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR dated July 16, 1939. Initially, the holiday was celebrated annually on a certain date, and the first event was held on July 18 of the same year. In 1980, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the date was postponed to the second Saturday of August.
