Svetlana Zhurova, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said on Friday, August 7, that European leaders seek to retain the role of the main mediators in resolving the conflict, while promises of Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU) remain only an illusion.

In a conversation with Lenta. The parliamentarian noted that European leaders seek to emphasize their own importance in the Ukrainian settlement and compete for the role of the main mediator. In her opinion, this complicates negotiations with Europe, since each country and its leadership want to extract political dividends.

Zhurova added that by financing Ukraine, European states are actually increasing its financial dependence and will not provide support without their own benefit. The MP believes that the prospects for Ukraine's accession to the EU remain extremely uncertain and may last for decades, although, according to her, Europe continues to motivate Kiev with this promise.

The head of the Other Ukraine movement, Viktor Medvedchuk, said earlier that day that Western countries were demanding that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky not make concessions to Russia, covering up such a position with political rhetoric. At the same time, Medvedchuk believes that the West itself does not seek to conduct direct negotiations with Moscow, but only formulates appropriate tasks for the Ukrainian leadership, the website notes. kp.ru . According to him, Ukraine's Western curators do not envisage Russia in their security concept, writes RT.

At the end of July, Medvedchuk said that Zelensky, during a visit to the United States, intended to complain to American President Donald Trump about the actions of European partners. He also expressed doubt that the United States would take Zelensky's side.
