By itself, sweat is practically odorless. An unpleasant "aroma" appears after the secretions of sweat glands come into contact with bacteria on the surface of the skin. However, a change in the usual body odor can sometimes be not only a matter of hygiene, but also a signal of disorders in the body. Elena Aleksentseva, a general practitioner at Invitro, told Izvestia about this on August 7.

According to the expert, bacteria break down the organic components of sweat and form volatile compounds that a person perceives as a smell. This process is especially active in the armpits and groin area.

"The intensity of the odor is influenced by the amount of sweat, skin condition, microflora, genetics, nutrition and lifestyle. For example, with increased sweating, bacteria have more nutrient medium, and hair in certain areas can retain moisture and enhance odor," explained Aleksentseva.

Even a regular shower does not always solve the problem, the doctor noted. The causes may be hormonal changes, stress, dietary patterns, or the composition of the skin's microbiome. Garlic, onions, hot spices, and alcohol can also change body odor, as their components are excreted through the skin.

At the same time, a persistent change in odor without an obvious reason may be a reason to consult a specialist. Some diseases have characteristic signs: with diabetes, the smell of acetone may appear, with impaired kidney function, an ammonia tint, and with liver problems, a specific odor resembling rotten eggs.

To reduce the unpleasant odor, Aleksentseva advised hygiene, choosing suitable care products and wearing clothes made of breathable fabrics. Deodorants mainly mask the smell, while antiperspirants reduce sweating.

The doctor concluded that body odor is formed due to the complex interaction of skin, bacteria, nutrition and the general condition of the body. If the usual smell has changed dramatically and persists for a long time, it is worth contacting a specialist.

Dermatologist Zarema Omarova told Izvestia on May 17 that under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, the body produces serotonin, which improves the emotional state. However, excessive exposure to sunlight can be harmful to health. Insufficient UV protection can lead to burns in the short term, and in the long term to premature skin aging (photoaging), disorders of cellular processes, and even the development of cancer.
