- Fetisov explained the reasons for the non-admission of the Russian national ice hockey team to the 2027 World Cup
The decision of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) not to allow the Russian national ice hockey team until the 2027 World Cup was probably influenced by the Scandinavian countries, as well as the USA and Canada. This opinion was expressed on August 7 by State Duma deputy and two-time Olympic champion Vyacheslav Fetisov.
"What's not clear here? Scandinavian countries, Canada, and America have influence. They're the reason for this decision. They do what they see fit," he told the Championship online portal.
Fetisov is convinced that Russia needs to strengthen its influence in the federation to resolve issues related to the participation of the national team, as well as to be able to "negotiate behind the scenes." The MP added that it is important to be inside the organization in order to understand the processes taking place there.
On July 30, the IIHF did not allow the Russian national ice hockey team to participate in the World Championship. The federation refused to participate in four of the five competitions due to "continuing concerns about the safety and integrity of the sport."At the same time, the Russian Hockey Federation announced plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge this decision.
