UEFA maintains boycott of FIFA tournaments after Infantino's apology
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has maintained its boycott of the International Football Federation (FIFA) tournaments, despite the apologies of the organization's president Gianni Infantino. This was reported on August 6 by Sky News channel.
The organization stated that in order to change its position, two conditions must be met: withdrawal of offers for the sale of major competitions and guarantees that such attempts to change the principles of tournaments will not happen again.
"Firstly, the offers for the sale of major competitions should have been withdrawn, and secondly, there should be assurances that such attempts to distort the game in this way will never happen again. These conditions have not been fulfilled," the UEFA statement said.
The organization also reported that trust in Infantino remains lost. UEFA noted that the statements of people from the FIFA head's entourage did not affect the organization's position.
"Yesterday's statement that some people who work for the FIFA president and whose careers depend on his favor agree with him does not change anything," the message says.
On the same day, Infantino apologized for mistakes made in promoting the FIFA Forward Enterprise project related to attracting private investors and selling a share of the rights to the World Cup. The text of the apology notes that the organization's management acknowledged the shortcomings after information about the project appeared in the media.
The scandalous plan of the current FIFA president was announced on July 28. He intended to attract private investors to finance the merger, which, according to the idea, would be carried out through the sale of minority stakes in a new commercial structure related to the rights to tournaments, including the World Cup. The proposal was met with strong criticism, which fell on its authors and eventually resulted in a boycott of all tournaments by UEFA.
