The severance of economic ties with Russia has dealt a devastating blow to Finland's border regions. This was announced on August 6 by the Euractiv portal.

"The biggest blow to the region has been the disappearance of Russian tourists, who once played a crucial role in the economy," the publication says.

According to the publication, the shutdown of the Russian tourist flow has accelerated the decline of the eastern part of the country, where Russian citizens have been the mainstay of the local business' customer base for years. There is a rapid outflow of population in the eastern municipalities, and the youth unemployment rate reaches 36.4%.

In addition, hotel owners complain about low profitability: tourists from other regions stay only for one night, while Russians stayed for a long time and spent significant amounts.

The agricultural sector is also suffering serious losses. The cost of farming has increased by 30% due to the loss of access to cheap Russian raw materials.

On August 2, Armando Mema, a member of the Finnish Freedom Alliance party, said that the sanctions policy against Russia had a negative impact on the Finnish economy.
