Politico calls Ukraine a "fault line" in future Italian parliamentary elections

The issue of military support for Ukraine divides Italy's left-wing and right-wing politicians ahead of the parliamentary elections in 2027. The Politico newspaper drew attention to this on August 4.

The media notes that former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, who heads the center-left Five Star movement, doubts the expediency of further military assistance to Ukraine.

Thus, if the left wins the next elections, the Kiev authorities may lose the support of the government of the Italian Republic.

A poll conducted by Politico showed that Five Stars and another center-left Democratic Party are not far behind in terms of points and are walking side by side with the center-right bloc led by current Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Among the Italian population, the newspaper clarifies, there is also very low support for the need for assistance to Ukraine.

On August 2, Conte criticized European countries for not seeking to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. The politician said that if he wins the preliminary elections, he intends to seek a negotiated way to end hostilities. He also expressed doubts about the volume of arms supplies to Kiev.

Also on July 31, former British Ambassador to Russia Ian Proud pointed out that possible changes in France's political course after the presidential election in 2027 could affect the situation around the conflict in Ukraine. In particular, the victory of the leader of the National Unification Party, Marine Le Pen, may lead to serious changes in France's domestic policy, the country's relations with the European Union (EU) and Europe's approach to the Ukrainian conflict.
