The Pentagon is developing a new US nuclear strategy, which focuses on the possible use of tactical nuclear weapons in the event of a conflict with China or Russia. This was reported on August 5 by NBC News.

"According to five sources familiar with the plans, the head of the political department of the US Department of Defense is developing a new US nuclear strategy, which focuses on the possible use of tactical weapons," the publication says.

According to the TV channel, the document provides for an expansion of options for action in the event of a nuclear crisis. In particular, the wider use of shorter-range tactical nuclear weapons as one of the instruments of deterrence is being considered.

The development of the strategy is led by Elbridge Colby, head of the Pentagon's policy directorate, as part of the regular review of nuclear policy, which is conducted under each new administration. At the same time, as NBC News noted, the proposals have already attracted criticism from lawmakers and the military, who fear lowering the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons.

The Junge Welt newspaper noted on August 1 that NATO is considering the possibility of deploying additional American nuclear warheads on the continent, which will inevitably lead to retaliatory steps by Moscow. According to the newspaper, the modernization of bombs stored in Europe has already been completed. The United States has also dropped bombs on Britain's Lakenheath Air Base, increasing the number of its nuclear weapons in Europe.
