In Belarus, the list of settlements in the zones of radioactive contamination has been reduced

In Belarus, it was decided to reduce the list of settlements and facilities located in areas of radioactive contamination, against the background of improving the radiation situation. This was announced on August 3 by the press service of the government of the country.

"The list of settlements and facilities located in areas of radioactive contamination has been updated," the Telegram channel said.

The new list was approved by a resolution of the Council of Ministers of Belarus. The document was signed by Prime Minister Alexander Turchin.

As noted in the government's message, the decision was made after analyzing the results of surveys of contaminated territories conducted in 2021-2025 by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Health. Specialists conducted soil sampling and assessed the dose burden on the population.

According to the current list, approved in 2021, there are 2022 settlements in the zones of radioactive contamination, where about 930.6 thousand people live, as well as 49 facilities.

After updating the list, it will include 1,845 settlements, 177 fewer than before. The number of residents of the territories belonging to the zones of radioactive contamination will be reduced to 364.2 thousand people. The number of objects will also decrease from 49 to 33.

In particular, the cities of Gomel, Luninets, Ivye and the urban settlement of Lelchitsy are excluded from the list.

The new decree will enter into force on January 1, 2027. At the same time, the authorities retained benefits for free meals until June 2027 for minor children who live or study in educational institutions in territories excluded from the category of polluted.

At a meeting of the Joint Board of the Prosecutor General's Offices of the two countries in Mogilev on May 22, Russian Prosecutor General Alexander Gutsan and his Belarusian counterpart Dmitry Gora identified specific tasks for solving problems in the environmental sphere. According to him, the participants discussed issues of environmental safety of the Union State and developed coordinated approaches to solving common environmental problems.
