There were 612 road accidents in Russia during the first weekend of August
Over the past first weekend of August, 612 road accidents were recorded on Russian roads, in which 78 people were killed and 853 injured. 69 of the dead were drivers and passengers. This was reported to Izvestia on August 3 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
In the Ulyanovsk region, a 76-year—old SUV driver decided in the morning on 163 km of the Tsilna - Shumovka regional highway to skip an adjustable railway crossing at a traffic light forbidding him to move, but collided with the locomotive of a freight train. An elderly passenger car driver and his passenger were killed in the accident.
The State Traffic Inspectorate reminded motorists of the importance of following the rules of passage of railway crossings, as this maneuver is considered dangerous and requires the driver to concentrate and pay maximum attention. Despite this, some drivers try to pass in front of a nearby train or locomotive. Trying to gain a few seconds of travel, they often endanger not only their own lives, but also the lives and health of their own passengers, railway staff, passengers on commuter trains and long-distance trains.
As a result of 103 accidents involving pedestrians, nine people were killed, and 97 more were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured were 27 child pedestrians, 22 of whom were injured when crossing the roadway in unintended places. Of the total number of pedestrian incidents, 38 occurred at pedestrian crossings and 65 outside their area of operation.
In addition, 128 accidents involving minors were registered on the roads of the Russian Federation over the past weekend, 140 young road users were injured, including 67 passengers. Three children were killed, one of whom was a passenger in a passenger vehicle, the second was a pedestrian, and the third was a cyclist.
So, in the Moscow region, late in the evening, on 17 km of the Stupino—Malino highway of regional significance, a 25-year-old car driver, while overtaking in an authorized place, drove into the oncoming lane, where he ran over a 12-year-old cyclist who was moving towards him, whom he did not see on the unlit road at the time of the maneuver. A schoolboy who rode a bicycle unaccompanied by adults died.
In the Novosibirsk region, in the evening, on 321 km of the Novosibirsk—Kochki—Pavlodar regional highway, a 53-year-old SUV driver ran over a seven-year-old pedestrian boy, who, although under the supervision of adult family members, suddenly began to run across the road in front of nearby vehicles. The boy died.
The State Traffic Inspectorate called on parents to monitor the leisure time and behavior of their young children during the ongoing summer school holidays and not to let them go outside alone, unattended, especially in the evening. The absence or weakening of parental control on the street for children of preschool and primary school age often leads to injuries or deaths of young road users, the department noted.
Motorists were also urged to be more careful on the roads. Special care should be taken when approaching pedestrian crossings, slowing down in front of them until they come to a complete stop in order to allow pedestrians to pass. The behavior of children is often unpredictable, so you should not rush to resume traffic, even at a permissive traffic light, until the crossing is completely free.
"In addition, we remind motorists that the life and health of their passengers depend entirely on the skills, driving experience, well-being and law-abiding behavior behind the wheel. Avoid risky driving, speeding, sudden lane changes, overtaking, and other dangerous maneuvers. We also draw the attention of drivers to the strict observance of the rules for transporting children. Take care of your young passengers, preventing even the prerequisites for a possible tragedy," said Police Colonel Anton Belan, Deputy head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of Child traffic Injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
Earlier, information began to spread in the media and social networks that allegedly from August 1, car inspectors would begin checking drivers for paper forms of the European protocol. These reports are not true, the Russian State Traffic Inspectorate said.
