Azerbaijani and British citizens were detained in Cyprus on suspicion of espionage.
The Cypriot authorities announced the arrest of Rashad Sultanov, a 44-year-old British and Azerbaijani citizen, at a British air base on suspicion of espionage and transmitting information to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This was reported by The Guardian on July 31.
"44-year—old Rashad Sultanov from Islington (north London) was arrested by the Cypriot authorities and is being held in custody in connection with the ongoing extradition procedure," the newspaper reports, citing a police statement.
According to police, Sultanov was monitoring the base, and then passed the information on to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
In April, Iran executed Mohammed Masum Shahi and Hamed Waleedy, accused of spying for the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. According to the court, they communicated with Israeli intelligence officers via the Internet and during trips to Iraqi Kurdistan.
