Finland supports Italy's proposal to temporarily exclude Spain from Schengen

All European countries should support Italy's proposal to temporarily exclude Spain from the Schengen area. This was announced on July 31 by Finnish Foreign Minister Mari Rantanen.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on the same day that Italy was considering suspending the Schengen Agreement with Spain amid a sharp increase in the number of illegal migrants in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. According to her, the current situation threatens the security of the external borders of the European Union. The Spanish Foreign Ministry, in turn, summoned the Italian ambassador against the background of such a statement.

"All European countries should support Meloni's proposal. Countries that do not fulfill their duties to protect the external border cannot be members of the Schengen area," Rantanen wrote on her page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

According to the diplomat, Madrid has completely failed to protect the external border of Schengen. She added that such actions can no longer continue.

The Hespress portal reported a day earlier that Spain and Morocco have agreed on the return of migrants who illegally arrived in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta during the latest surge in illegal migration. It was noted that the agreement provides for the return to Morocco of all migrants who illegally crossed the border, including minors.
