The priest explained the reason for the consecration of honey on the Honey Savior
The consecration of honey on the Honey Savior is not a magical ritual, but a way to express gratitude to God for his gifts. The rector of the church in honor of the Apostle and Evangelist Luke in Tver, Anthony Rusakevich, told Izvestia about this.
"The consecration of honey on August 14 is a folk tradition that is organically intertwined with the church celebration, but requires proper understanding. By this time, the main harvest is completed in the apiaries, and people have long been bringing the firstfruits of new honey to the temple. It is important to realize that the Church interprets this rite not as a magical ritual, but as an act of thanking God for His generous gifts, with which He nourishes man," Father Anthony noted.
At the same time, the priest emphasized that the central event of the holiday was not the consecration of honey at all, but the solemn offering and worship of the Life—giving Cross of the Lord.
"The main word in the name of the holiday is "Saved", not "honey". The celebration is dedicated to the Savior, and the consecration of honey is only one of the ways to glorify Him and bring Him the fruits of his labors in gratitude, but it should never overshadow prayer and worship of the Lord's Cross," he recalled.
Father Anthony also warned against the widespread superstition that consecrated honey supposedly has special healing or protective properties.
"The deepest meaning of consecration is not to turn honey into a magic medicine, but to taste it and reverently remember the grace of God and the One who sends us everything we need for life," the priest explained. "Without sincere prayer and lively participation in worship, the external rite loses all meaning."
