The expert spoke about the impact of behavior assessment on school performance
Behavior assessments have significant potential to influence students, but their effect depends on the way they are applied and the context in which they are used. This was announced by Sergey Kosaretsky, Vice-rector for Research at the Moscow State Pedagogical University, in a conversation with Izvestia.
A positive effect is achieved in cases where the assessment is accompanied by meaningful feedback and an explanation of the facts on which it is based, or is associated with specific consequences, such as the deprivation of certain privileges that do not affect the basic rights of the student, or the inclusion of information in the portfolio when applying to university.
"The effect weakens if the assessment is given automatically, without explanation. If the assessment is reduced to a formal "mark" without explanation, then there may be no effect or it may even be the opposite. Assessments of this kind create the appearance of control or, conversely, reinforce negative stereotypes," Kosaretsky said.
The expert emphasized that assessment should not be considered as a universal means of influence. It must be combined with other parenting methods and take into account the context of behavior, as well as the life and educational circumstances of the child. Using grades as the only tool leads to a decrease in intrinsic motivation when a student begins to follow the rules solely for the sake of getting a mark or avoiding punishment.
Separately, the expert drew attention to the risks of the formation of stable negative attitudes. So, according to Kosaretsky, constant "satisfactory" behavior can lead to the fact that the child will begin to consider himself a "bully", which will reduce his desire for positive changes.
The expert stressed that the Ministry of Education introduces behavior assessments not only to correct violations, but also to support positive personal qualities, as well as to stimulate academic and extracurricular activities. In this context, assessments help to form guidelines and set positive examples for other students.
"Grades for behavior are an external regulator. In order to follow the norms of behavior, a child must be taught the norms themselves, as well as develop the skills that allow them to be followed. The assessment fulfills its potential in the hands of a competent and wise teacher," the specialist said.
