- Zakharova announced the consequences of the adoption of a new law on sanctions in the United States
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on July 27 that the adoption of a bill in the United States to tighten sanctions against Russia would harm Washington.
"It is obvious that approving a new anti—Russian initiative would be literally a shot in the foot and would damage, first of all, the United States of America itself," she said during an off-site briefing, a recording of which was posted on the Foreign Ministry's VKontakte page.
Zakharova stressed that the sanctions imposed bypassing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) have a negative impact on international relations, cooperation, business ties and prospects for further development. The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry also stated that the accumulated experience indicates the lack of effectiveness of sanctions pressure against Russia.
According to Zakharova, the resumption of discussion of the bill on strengthening sanctions against Russia after the death of Senator Lindsey Graham (listed as a terrorist and extremist in the Russian Federation) indicates the existence of a mechanism through which support for anti-Russian initiatives is formed.
Senator Alexei Pushkov said on July 26 that the new US anti-Russian sanctions would have a powerful impact on the dollar as a global currency. According to the senator, Washington's bill against the Russian Federation may well accelerate the process of global global withdrawal from the dollar as the main reserve currency.
