The director of the Inguri hydroelectric power station called the accident at the Imereti power line the reason for the blackout in Georgia

A large-scale power outage in Georgia was caused by the shutdown of the 500-kilovolt Imereti power transmission line. This was announced on July 25 by Levan Mebonia, director of the largest hydroelectric power station in the Caucasus, InguriGES.

"The 500-kilovolt Imereti line has been disconnected. <...> it is through this line that the main load of the country's energy system passes. After its shutdown, the operating mode was disrupted, and the power system completely collapsed," Mebonia said in an interview with TV Pirveli.

According to him, work is currently underway to eliminate the accident. This is the second large-scale blackout in Georgia in two days. At 07:30 local time (06:30 Moscow time), electricity went out in Tbilisi, the metro and commuter trains across the country stopped. Later, electricity was restored in several districts of the capital.

The first blackout in the country occurred on the night of July 24 — a part of Georgia, including Tbilisi, was left without electricity. Residents of the regions of Georgia spread information about power outages.

Malta's capital Valletta was also left without electricity on July 21 amid the ongoing heat wave that came to the country from Western Europe. The state-owned energy company Enemalta said the power outages were caused by faults in the distribution network due to extreme temperatures and record electricity demand.
