- The engineer warned about the unexplored dangerous asteroids for the Earth
Experts have not yet discovered all the asteroids that may pose a potential threat to Earth. This was announced on July 23 by Mikhail Maslov, an engineer at the Vega Observatory of Novosibirsk State University.
"The problem is that not all potentially dangerous asteroids have been discovered yet," he told TASS.
At the same time, almost all large asteroids in near-Earth orbits are already known to experts, Maslov said. The collision of such objects with the planet could lead to devastating consequences.
According to Maslov, astronomers are able to calculate the trajectories of discovered asteroids and estimate the probability of their collision with Earth. The main difficulty remains the search for small celestial bodies due to the limited capabilities of existing observation systems.
The sensitivity of the equipment is gradually increasing, thanks to which scientists are finding smaller and smaller asteroids, the engineer said. However, the improvement of the systems is not going as fast as experts would like.
One of the known potentially dangerous objects is the asteroid Apophis, discovered in 2004. Its size is comparable to a skyscraper. It is expected that on April 13, 2029, it will pass at a distance of about 32 thousand km from Earth. In July, it was reported that about 90% of the world's inhabitants would be able to see it. Apophis will appear in the earth's sky as a small luminous dot. In about one minute, the asteroid will shift by a distance equal to the width of the full lunar disk.
