Saxophonist Johnson, who played a solo for the Pink Panther, died at the age of 95.

American saxophonist Plas Johnson, who performed the famous solo for the movie "The Pink Panther", has died at the age of 94. This was reported by The New York Times on July 22.

"Plas Johnson, the Hollywood studio musician whose tenor saxophone, played in the opening credits of the 1963 film The Pink Panther, lent a playful touch to one of the most recognizable film themes of all time, died on Wednesday," the publication says.

The musician died at his home in Los Angeles. His son Eric Johnson and daughter Stephanie Oliver said that shortly before his death, he continued to perform — the last concert at the nursing home where he lived took place about a month ago.

Johnson is best known for his performance of the tenor saxophone part in the title theme of the 1963 film The Pink Panther, the music for which was written by composer Henry Mancini. Later, the melody became one of the most recognizable in the history of world cinema.

In addition to working on The Pink Panther, Johnson participated in recording rock and roll hits of the 1950s, television soundtracks and collaborated with famous musicians. Previously, he also recorded tracks for the album The Music From Peter Gunn, which became the first Grammy Award winner in the Album of the Year category.
