Reuters reported on the opening of a police station in Hitler's house in Austria

In the Austrian city of Branau Am Inn, a police station will be opened in the house where Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was born. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on July 22.

The agency notes that the house was previously privately owned. It also housed a charity organization for the disabled. However, after years of disputes over the house, the authorities forcibly bought the building in 2017, and in 2019 they announced its reconstruction and transformation into a police station.

"The goal was to exclude any connection with Adolf Hitler and deprive the building of such connotation," the agency quoted Stefan Molzoch, head of the historical department of the Austrian Interior Ministry, as saying.

Austrian historian Florian Katanko told Izvestia correspondent Margarita Kostiv that the building of the Salzburg suburb was built in the 15th century and was privately owned until 1938. He noted that Hitler had lived in the house for about a year, and in the city of Braunau am Inn for just over three years. Then the Fuhrer's family moved to Passau, Germany, in connection with his father's transfer to the service.

At the same time, Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stressed that the opening of the police station does not mean that the city refuses to preserve historical memory. He noted that a memorial stone made of granite from the former Mauthausen concentration camp with the inscription "No more fascism" will remain in front of the building as a reminder of the crimes of Nazism.

"Memory does not disappear, nothing is hushed up. <...> The words "No more fascism" should continue to serve as a reminder to everyone who enters or passes by this building," Karner said.

At the same time, the locals received the initiative of the authorities to convert the house into a police station ambiguously. So, some believe that the location of the police in the house will not help "the world forget where the bloodiest murderer in history was born."

She also suggested that the decision of the authorities would not affect the decrease in the influx of "pilgrims" and admirers of Hitler's ideas to the city.
