Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with candidate for the post of Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Macky Sall, according to the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry on July 20.
It is specified that the guest presented his election program to Lavrov during the talks.
"The minister explained to Maki Sall the requirements imposed by Russia to applicants for the highest UN post," the press service of the department noted.
Both sides confirmed that they remain committed to the central coordinating role of the United Nations in world affairs.
Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev said on July 8 that since 2000, Russia has trained more than 2.7 thousand highly qualified Russian and foreign candidates to participate in UN missions. The head of the department stressed that UN peacekeeping missions play an important role in maintaining international law and order, which is how Russia assesses their importance.
