The leader has changed at the domestic box office. The comedy "To the Village of Grandpa 2" with Yuri Stoyanov and Fyodor Dobronravov collected 101 million rubles over the weekend and beat the biographical film "Michael", which headed the box office for four weeks in a row. The top three also included the horror "The Sinister Dead: Inferno", which started with collections of 61 million rubles.

Grandfathers vs. "Michael"

The sequel to the family comedy with Yuri Stoyanov "To Grandpa's Village" is being released in Russian cinemas. In the second part, there were more grandfathers — Fyodor Dobronravov joined the cast. In the story, the pensioners begin to compete for the attention of Vladik's grandson.

Over the weekend, the film grossed just over 100 million rubles, which allowed it to bypass the leaders of the previous weeks — "Michael" and "Serf 3" — and take the first place in the box office. However, this is not such a successful start as the previous film: the first part earned 142 million in its debut weekend a year ago and surpassed Ballerina in the John Wick universe.

But in fairness, it should be noted that the dynamics of the number of viewers then (at the time of the film's release) was higher: 1.6 million in the period from June 12 to June 15, 2025, whereas now — from July 16 to July 19, 2026 - 1 million.

— The film will run for a long time due to the demand for the subject among the target audience and the warm reception of the first part. The final fees will largely be determined by the second weekend," Olga Zinyakova, General Director of the KARO cinema chain, explained to Izvestia.

After four weeks of leadership, "Michael" dropped to the second line of the rating with 61.6 million collections over the weekend. Up to 2 billion in the domestic box office, he lacks a little more than 3 million rubles (at the time of publication of the material).

"It doesn't look like a failure"

Meanwhile, "Serf 3" seems to have finally lost ground, and it's safe to say that it won't repeat the success of the previous installments of the franchise. Six weeks later, the film surpassed the mark of 1 billion rubles at the box office. Over the last weekend, he brought only 37 million rubles to the box office. For comparison, the total fees of the first "Serf" are 3 billion rubles, the second is 3.8 billion rubles. Now the third part of the franchise occupies the fourth line of the box office.

However, Olga Zinyakova calls even the billion-dollar fees a pleasant precedent. It should be borne in mind that the creators of the franchise deliberately set the premiere of the new part for the summer in order to support the rental during the lull.

— The fact that the comedy has collected a billion proves that a good film will find its audience at any time of the year. And that there is no need to be afraid of summer. Already, the release has overtaken "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the list of box office hits in Russia, soon it will overtake "It" and "Domovenka Kuzya" — it doesn't look like a failure. Another thing is that the box office of the film in the New Year's battle could have been much higher, but this is just speculation. The competition in 2026 was such that releases took the box office from each other. And the conditions for the release in the summer are different," she said.

The new horror "The Sinister Dead: Inferno" closes the top 3. This is a continuation of the cult franchise, which dates back to 1978 with a short film. The plot of all the stories revolves around an ancient book that can turn people into the living dead, possessed by demons.

— This is another part of the super-popular, iconic "Evil Dead" franchise. Therefore, it is the fans of the classics who generate interest in the novelty. It is clear that not much has been preserved from the original Raimi trilogy, but the handwriting remains — fans of zombie horror have something to profit from, says Olga Zinyakova.

The new series was directed by Sebastian Vanicek, a young director who made his full—length debut three years ago. Then he released the "Web of Fear" and talked about it in an interview with Izvestia.

— Horror is the best way to express yourself. About anything: about social issues, about politics, about philosophical subjects," Vanicek said.

Other horror films continue to replenish the box office.
