Nuclear power plants may be built in the Nizhny Novgorod region by the end of the 2030s.

The commissioning of a new nuclear power plant in the Novgorod Region is possible in the late 2030s and early 2040s. This was announced on July 20 by the governor of the region Gleb Nikitin.

"The construction of such a serious facility will take a long time. Commissioning is possible approximately in the late 2030s — early 2040s. But during the construction of the nuclear power plant, it will become an incredible driver for the region's economy," he wrote in his channel in the Maks messenger.

The head of the region noted that the region has consistently sought the construction of a nuclear power plant and has already received the support of the Russian Ministry of Energy for inclusion in the general layout of electric power facilities for 2027. Nikitin called it a mistake to abandon the completion of the Gorky AST at the end of the last century, the construction of which was carried out in the 80s and was frozen after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

According to him, the safety of nuclear power plants is now at a fundamentally different level. With the launch of the NPP, the region will receive a new quality of energy complex and enormous opportunities for development. A working group has been set up in the regional government to locate the station, and locations in Vyksa, Krasny Baky and on the banks of the Gorky Reservoir are being considered.

Rosatom State Corporation announced on June 23 that it is developing a project for Russia's largest spent nuclear fuel reprocessing and recycling of nuclear materials for their further use in the nuclear power industry, including fourth-generation power systems. According to the state corporation, the enterprise will become a key element in the development of two-component nuclear energy with a closed nuclear fuel cycle, involving the joint operation of fast neutron reactors and thermal reactors.
