The death of a child on Elbrus. What is known

On July 19, a father and his 11-year-old son fell off the eastern peak of Mount Elbrus. As a result of the fall, the child died, the man received multiple injuries. Rescuers found them at an altitude of about 4.2 thousand meters, but due to darkness, the evacuation was postponed to the next day. The circumstances of the incident

The tragedy occurred on July 19 at the eastern peak of Mount Elbrus. According to preliminary data, during the ascent, the father and son, who were walking in a bundle, broke the safety rope. The climbers fell from the cliffs, being at an altitude of 4.2 thousand m. As a result of the fall, an 11-year-old boy died on the spot from his injuries, his father survived, but was seriously injured. The route was not registered.

The identity of the deceased and the injured

The victim turned out to be an 11-year-old boy who went to the mountains with his 40-year-old father. The family is originally from Donetsk, and they have been living in the Stavropol Territory for the last few years. As a result of the fall, the father suffered multiple fractures, including ribs and legs. He was also diagnosed with fractures of both kneecaps.

An attempt to climb a year ago

A year ago, a father and son had already tried to conquer Elbrus, but they did not reach the western peak at about 300 m — the child became ill. According to other sources, they canceled the ascent due to the weather. Despite the failure, a year later they made a new attempt, which ended in tragedy.

Rescue operation

Rescuers of the Ministry of Emergency Situations found the injured man and the body of the deceased child on the eastern slope of Mount Elbrus at an altitude of about 4,200 m. Due to the onset of darkness and bad weather, the evacuation was postponed to Monday, July 20. The regional Ministry of Emergency Situations later reported that the body of an 11-year-old boy and his injured father were evacuated from Mount Elbrus.

The reaction of the authorities

Alexander Bastrykin, Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia, instructed the head of the investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic to submit a detailed report on the progress of the audit and all the established circumstances of the incident.
