Passenger ferry sank off the coast of Guyana

The MV BARIMA ferry sank off the coast of Guyana, with 116 passengers and crew on board, and eight people were rescued. This was reported by Demerara Waves on July 19.

"The MV BARIMA ferry, en route to the Northwestern District, capsized off the coast of Guyana. At the moment, eight people have been rescued," the newspaper writes, citing a statement by Guyana's Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill.

According to the minister, another ferry is heading to the crash area to provide emergency medical assistance.

According to the newspaper, the ferry was discovered by a search and rescue team from the air after the crew launched flares. The ship was sailing from Georgetown to Port Kaituma.
