Russians were told the useful properties of radish and the rules of its choice.
Radishes are not only one of the most popular seasonal vegetables, but they can also be a useful addition to the diet due to their low calorie content and high vitamin content. This was reported to Izvestia on July 19 in Roskachestvo.
"Radishes consist of about 93% water, and their energy value is about 20 kcal per 100 g. Due to their high fiber content and low calorie content, they are often included in the menu by weight watchers. Some nutritionists consider radishes to be products with a so—called negative calorie content, since the body can use more energy to digest them than it receives," the experts explained.
In addition, the root vegetable is rich in vitamins B and PP, as well as potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium and iron. According to experts, B vitamins support the functioning of the nervous system, help to tolerate stress more easily and participate in energy metabolism. Vitamin PP, along with potassium and magnesium, strengthens blood vessels, helps maintain normal blood pressure and reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
Another useful property of radishes is related to the content of essential oils, including mustard. They have a phytoncidal effect and can have a warming effect, so vegetables are often recommended to be included in the diet during the cold season.
However, experts reminded that radishes are not suitable for everyone. Due to the high content of essential oils, it can irritate the gastric mucosa and enhance the production of digestive juices. Therefore, in case of exacerbation of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver or pancreas, it is better to abandon its use.
For those who like salads with radishes, experts have advised filling them with sour cream, which helps to soften the irritating effects of the vegetable. At the same time, radishes bring maximum benefits in their raw form. It is also important to consider possible individual intolerance to the product.
Roskachestvo also reminded about the rules for choosing high-quality radishes. Fresh vegetables should be firm and elastic, with a smooth skin without cracks, damage and traces of mold. The tops of high-quality radishes remain green and juicy, and the root crop itself should have a rich color characteristic of its variety.
To keep the vegetable fresh for longer, experts recommended cutting off the tops and wrapping the radishes in paper before storing them in the refrigerator. If you leave the leaves, the root crop will lose moisture faster and begin to wither.
Andrey Tumanov, chairman of the Moscow Horticultural Union, told on Friday, July 10, how to recognize a deadly berry. He advised to visually study the castor oil, which is often found in urban landscaping. The expert added that poisonous berries are usually very bitter.
