The Russian government has written off debts from nine regions by 8.3 billion rubles.

The government of the Russian Federation has written off part of the debt on budget loans to nine regions totaling more than 8.3 billion rubles. This was announced on July 16 by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin during a government meeting.

He stressed that the government, on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin, continues to systematically reduce the debt burden of the regions, which are actively improving living conditions for citizens and doing business. According to the Prime Minister, two thirds of the debt on budget loans are systematically written off to such entities.

"This time we will reduce the debt by 8.37 billion rubles in total. This will affect the republics of Altai, Bashkortostan and the Chechen Republic, as well as the Ivanovo, Leningrad, Orel, Saratov, Tambov and Tver regions," Mishustin said.

He explained that these regions invested their own funds in the development of engineering facilities and support settlements, were engaged in the modernization of public utilities and actively participated in the implementation of national projects. In addition, local authorities promoted the resettlement of emergency housing, supported the industrial sector and renovated the public transport fleet.

"Together with this volume, the debt of the subjects of the Russian Federation will decrease by 286 billion rubles this year, and the number of regions that have been able to take advantage of this opportunity will already increase to 71," the chairman of the Russian government added.

On April 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the United Russia initiative to postpone the deadline for the regions of the Russian Federation to pay their debts on budget loans from 2026 to a later date. He called the support of the Russian regions and their budget sustainability a separate task of the authorities. The President instructed the government, the State Duma and the Federation Council to implement the party's initiative in the near future.
