What kind of weather is expected in August 2026 in Russia
According to the Hydrometeorological Center, in general, the temperature background in the country will be close to the climatic norm, but with small positive anomalies. Due to the high variability of air currents, the weather can change dramatically: heat waves will alternate with short-term cold spells, showers and thunderstorms.
In the European part of Russia, summer weather will remain in the first half of August, but a cold snap is possible in the second decade. In Moscow and the Moscow region, the average monthly temperature is expected to be +20...+25 degrees, and by the end of the month it may decrease to +17 ...+22 degrees. Precipitation will generally be within the normal range, although local showers are possible.
Heat is forecast in the south of the country (Volgograd, Astrakhan, Rostov regions, Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories): temperatures may reach +32 degrees. This increases the risk of drought and wildfires. In the south of the Volga region (in the Saratov and Samara regions), heat is also expected to reach +32 degrees.
Warmer-than-usual temperatures are forecast in the Urals and Western Siberia. According to forecasts, daytime temperatures will drop from +23 degrees at the beginning of the month to +16 degrees at the end, and nighttime temperatures will drop from +12 to +7 degrees.
The monsoon rainy season is expected in the Far East. This can lead to waterlogging of the soil and create a threat of flooding. The daytime temperature is expected to be +22...+25 degrees during the month, and the night temperature is expected to be +17...+21 degrees.
In the north (Murmansk region, north of Karelia) it will be warmer by 1 °C than the average according to climatic standards. During the day, the temperature will be +15...+21 degrees, at night — +8...+13 degrees.
"In August, the temperature may drop by several degrees per day. But this happens much less frequently than it does in June and July," said Leonid Starkov, a leading meteorologist at the Gismeteo portal.
Weather forecast for August in Moscow and the Moscow region
August is a transitional month in the capital region: it begins as a full—fledged summer, and by the end it looks more and more like autumn. In the first decade, the weather differs little from July, but closer to September it becomes obvious that the season is changing.
According to preliminary data, the average temperature in the Moscow region will exceed the norm by about 1 degree, and precipitation will remain close to the climatic norm. At the same time, experts emphasize that monthly precipitation forecasts are traditionally not very accurate: precipitation is very local, and its distribution across the territory varies greatly.
"Since the background temperature will be slightly higher than normal, the rains will be short-lived. You can't say that for a whole week or, God forbid, for a decade. No, that's not supposed to happen. This is extremely rare. August is a summer month, which is characterized by short-term precipitation, although it may be stormy. For example, heavy rain can fall for only 5-10 minutes, and this is quite enough to classify it as heavy, so such rains are possible here," explained Tatyana Pozdnyakova, chief specialist of the Moscow Meteorological Bureau.
According to the expert, in the first decade of August, the night temperature will remain quite high — in the range of +13...+18 degrees, and the prevailing daytime temperature will be +20...+25 degrees.
"In the second decade, the nights will become colder — in the range of about +11...+16 degrees, daytime temperature — +17 ...+22 degrees. But in August, in general, the air temperature is already starting to drop," said Tatiana Pozdnyakova.
She added that, in her opinion, it's just gorgeous weather. But at the same time, the specialist did not rule out sudden weather events.
"In August, powerful cumulus clouds will still develop, thunderstorm activity is possible," the expert warned. — During thunderstorms, as a rule, there is always a strong increase in wind, so it is impossible to say that August will be without such cataclysms. Another thing is how strong they will be: it's hard to say. In August, both showers and thunderstorms in the metropolitan region are still quite possible," the meteorologist noted.
The meteorologist also drew attention to the local nature of precipitation.
"Precipitation is very local. For example, now everyone says that July was flooded with rain, and Moscow has not yet had even half of the monthly norm, so forecasts for precipitation are partly subjective," explained Tatiana Pozdnyakova.
It is important to keep in mind that long-term forecasts are based on long-term climate data and reflect only probable trends, but do not guarantee accurate weather on specific days. A more detailed forecast appears closer to the end of July.
"In 3-5 days, a process is visible that determines the change in the nature of the weather," the expert said. "It is during this period that the forecast becomes significantly more reliable, since meteorologists can track the formation of relevant atmospheric phenomena."
What will the weather be like in St. Petersburg in August
August in St. Petersburg‑St. Petersburg is famous for its changeability: the month begins lavishly in summer ‑ with warmth, rare rains and a long light day, and ends almost in autumn. In recent days, gloomy skies, frequent precipitation and a noticeable morning chill have often been observed. The daylight hours are noticeably reduced: from about 17 hours at the beginning of the month to 15 hours by the end of it.
The temperature in the first half of August is forecast to be around +20...+22 degrees during the day and +12...+14 degrees at night. The wind is 4.4—5.4 m/s; during periods of changing weather fronts, short–term storms with strong gusts are possible, when the wind speed can increase sharply and the sky is rapidly covered with dense clouds.
In the second half of the month, average temperatures decrease: during the day — up to +16...+19 degrees, at night — up to +9 ...+12 degrees. At the same time, the nature of precipitation is changing: if in early August the rains are more often short and torrential, then towards the end of the month there are more and more prolonged drizzling rains.
Humidity remains high throughout the month, often exceeding 70-80%, which can make even relatively warm days feel cooler.
It is not uncommon in August for sudden changes in weather to occur during the day: a sunny morning may turn into a rainy afternoon, and the sun will come out again in the evening.
In which regions will there be heavy rains and gale force winds in August
In the south of the European part of Russia (Krasnodar Territory, Rostov, Astrakhan, Volgograd regions, Stavropol Territory), especially in the second half of the month, due to the contrast between the warmed‑up land and the cool water of the Black and Azov Seas, powerful local showers are possible. Sometimes a monthly precipitation rate falls in an hour. Thunderstorms are often accompanied by heavy winds: gusts can reach 20-25 m/s.
In the north‑west (St. Petersburg‑St. Petersburg, Leningrad region, Karelia, Komi) August will be influenced by cyclones: periods of cloudy weather and rains will alternate. During the passage of atmospheric fronts, squally winds and intense short-term precipitation are possible.
In the Far East (Primorye, Khabarovsk Territory, Sakhalin, Kamchatka), August is the peak of monsoon activity, so heavy rains, storms on the coast and strong winds are likely. Due to prolonged and intense precipitation, there is a risk of waterlogging the soil and overflowing rivers, especially in low‑lying areas and near large watercourses.
"In August, the Far Eastern region will be the rainiest. This is due to the fact that the Far Eastern monsoon is entering an active phase. Precipitation levels in this region will be around normal. But there is always a risk of flooding," Leonid Starkov said.
In the Urals, the weather may remain relatively dry in the first half of the month, but towards the middle of August, waves of coolness are expected — they will bring rains and thunderstorms. Sudden weather changes can complicate the traffic situation.
In the Volga region, in some areas, in particular in the south of the region (Saratov and Samara regions), periods of heavy precipitation and increased wind are possible due to the blocking anticyclone.
