- The IOC filed a complaint against the head of FIFA over the cancellation of Balogun's disqualification.
An official complaint has been filed against the president of the International Football Federation (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after the intervention of US President Donald Trump in the process of disqualification of the American national football team player Folarin Balogun. This was reported on July 14 by the newspaper City A.M.
According to the newspaper, there is evidence that the decision to lift the suspension was made under political pressure from Trump. The dossier includes quotes from the American leader himself, who confirmed the fact of communication with Infantino and his request to FIFA for a review of the case, adds "Газета.Ru ".
"If Gianni Infantino intervened in this case on the instructions of the US president, it would not only be a serious violation of the IOC rules on political neutrality, but also violate the fundamental principle of fair play," the article says.
Balogun received a red card on July 2 in the 64th minute of the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which ended in a 2-0 victory for the Americans. Former FIFA President Joseph Blatter condemned the cancellation of this decision on July 6. He said that football should not become a platform for political power. The European Commission, on the contrary, refused the same reaction.
On July 5, FIFA changed its mind about imposing an automatic one-match suspension against Balogun, limiting itself to a probation period of one year. It was noted that Trump had warned the president of the Infantino organization that the White House was even ready to involve lawyers in this case.
