- The media learned about Trump's plan to introduce fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz
For several months, US President Donald Trump has been seeking to impose a 20% fee for the passage of goods through the Strait of Hormuz and intends to implement this initiative in the near future. This was reported on July 14 by the Semafor portal with reference to an unnamed representative of the White House.
"That's exactly what he always wanted, but people tried to talk him out of it. It was always an instinctive decision for him, and now he's just come back to this idea," the Semafor source said.
According to the portal, the details of the payment collection mechanism are currently being worked out. At the moment, it remains unclear exactly how this system will function and whether the US authorities have conducted preliminary consultations with the Gulf states.
This initiative contradicts the position of other senior members of the administration. In particular, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance has previously stressed that international waterways should remain free of tolls.
In turn, Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined the statement of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Persian Gulf, which condemned any attempts to establish control over the strait or impose fees for the passage of ships.
On July 13, Trump announced that the United States was taking control of the Strait of Hormuz. It was noted that the United States would lead his protection. In addition, the country can call this mission a "Guardian Angel."
On the same day, the US president announced that he had resumed the naval blockade of Iran in the strait, and the waterway would continue to function. According to the head of the White House, the restrictions imposed relate exclusively to the Iranian side and its partners.
