On July 14, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova ironically commented on the statement by the head of the European Diplomacy, Kai Kallas, about the geopolitical significance of fish.

Earlier, Kallas, explaining the absence of a ban on the import of Russian fish in the new package of EU sanctions, said that she did not expect that this product was of such great geopolitical importance and complicated many important processes.

"While Callas was dealing with the geopolitical significance of the fish, it went rotten. And not only fish," Zakharova said in an interview with kp.ru .

A day earlier, the European Union ruled out anti-Russian sanctions because it is of strategic importance. Kallas noted that fish products are indeed capable of slowing down a number of important geopolitical processes. She added that fish products had to be excluded from the sanctions list due to the position of a number of member states of the association.

On the same day, Kallas reported that the EU member states had not yet agreed on the 21st package of sanctions against Russia. As Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budris noted, European countries cannot agree on a ban on maritime transportation and stricter restrictions on Russian liquefied natural gas.
