In China, a woman bit her husband's toes for five years to wake him up from a coma
A resident of the Chinese province of Henan helped her husband get out of a deep coma, in which he spent almost five years, biting his toes daily to stimulate nerve endings. This was reported by the South China Morning Post newspaper.
According to the newspaper, the tragedy in the family of former kindergarten teacher Song Mei and builder Zhao Jinqian occurred in October 2019. A man fell from a height of six meters, saving a three-year-old child stuck on the roof of a warehouse.
Zhao covered the boy with his body, so that the child was not injured, but the savior himself suffered severe brain injuries and numerous fractures. Doctors estimated the chances of his awakening as minimal.
It is reported that to pay for the treatment, Song Mei quit her job and began selling paintings online. On the advice of doctors, she massaged her husband's limbs daily. One day, a woman accidentally bit his toe and noticed a slight reaction.
From that moment on, she began to use this method regularly, putting a clean bag on the patient's foot and biting her fingers to stimulate the nerves. By 2024, Zhao began to open his eyes and respond to external stimuli.
Being in a hospital room on June 30, for the first time in five years, a man was able to whisper words of gratitude, telling his wife that he "loves her."
At the moment, the man's condition is gradually improving: he understands speech, can raise his hand at a signal and stand for a short time with outside help. During writing training, the first words the patient could deduce were the name of his spouse.
"Everyone says that the path ahead is difficult, but husband and wife are made to overcome adversity together. I do not know the best medicine, but I am ready to continue going through all these many years," the woman wrote on social media during her husband's rehabilitation.
British singer Bonnie Tyler, who underwent emergency surgery in Portugal, regained consciousness on June 15 after an induced coma. In May, the 74-year-old singer was admitted to the hospital with a serious infection that caused intestinal perforation. The perforation was repaired, but the infection could not be defeated, so she was put into an artificial coma.
