Poland announced plans to tighten the rules for obtaining citizenship

The Polish authorities are preparing to tighten the rules for obtaining citizenship, which will greatly affect Ukrainians applying for it. This was reported on July 13 by the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita with reference to the country's Interior Ministry.

"The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration is finalizing an amendment to the Law on Citizenship, which will most significantly affect Ukrainian citizens. For many years, Ukrainians have been the largest national group applying for Polish citizenship," the article says.

The project involves four "key changes". The first one provides for an extension of the required period of residence in Poland to eight years. A citizenship test will also be introduced, which will be conducted in Polish at the B2 level. Foreigners will be required to be "fluent in Polish and understand complex texts."

"The key element will be a "loyalty certificate", which the foreigner will have to sign at the end of the procedure. This is intended to be a deterrent for those who may act against Poland's interests," Rzeczpospolita writes.

Moreover, the "certificate of loyalty" will be the basis for the deprivation of citizenship of those citizens whose actions contradict the interests of Warsaw, the publication says.

According to the publication, currently more than 40 thousand Ukrainians have Polish citizenship.

The newspaper also reports that Ukrainians liable for military service will soon not be able to enter the European Union and receive temporary protection there. To enter, Ukrainian citizens will have to show a certificate confirming their release from mobilization in their homeland.
