Silver and three finals. Results of the World Cup in Milan
The World Cup stage in Milan has become a test of character for Russian gymnasts. Mistakes in the all-around did not allow Maria Borisova and Arina Kovshova, pupils of Alina Kabayeva's Heavenly Grace Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy, to compete for high positions. However, both gymnasts reached the finals of individual sports, and Kovshova finished the competition with a silver medal in the ribbon exercise.
Borisova: bright performance with the ball
Qualifying did not start easily for Maria Borisova. In the maces exercise, both objects were lost on the second risk. In addition, the turn in the planchet was not counted due to the heel, and in the last risk, the gymnast managed to perform only two somersaults instead of three. The estimate is 27,250.
In the tape, Maria again made an inaccuracy at the first risk: after a long throw, there was a slight hitch when fishing. Then the athlete performed four clean turns in the planche. But due to the loss of the tape after the boomerang, it was not possible to start the fuete with a musical accent in time, which lowered the score for artistry. The judges scored 27.350 points.
In the hoop exercise, our gymnast had to catch up with the object again after throwing too far at the first risk. Despite this, she managed to catch the hoop with two additional criteria at once — without using her hands and in a rotational motion. Due to the lag in music, Maria hurried to spin in the side splits without using her hand and made only half a turn. The second risk also turned out to be inaccurate: after a long throw, the catch was completed after leaving the court. The total is 27,450.
Maria's best look in qualifying was the ball. The gymnast performed a difficult risk cleanly with two turns under the throw, and also confidently coped with the lateral rotation without using her hand. The only noticeable loss of value was catching the next risk with two hands, which is why the gymnast did not receive additional tenths. The estimate is 28,500.
According to the results of the all-around, Maria scored 110.550 points and took ninth place. At the same time, Borisova made it to two finals — with a ball and a ribbon.
Kovshova: strong maces and ribbon
For Arina Kovshova, the tournament also started with an unsuccessful exercise. Already at the first risk, a loss occurred with the hoop. And then the gymnast couldn't handle her trademark fishing risk: she kicked the object off and it flew off the court. But at the same time, Arina kept the image, adding an expressive wave of her hands. It was not possible to get into the strong part of the music in the dance track. One of the advantages is a clean series of four jumps by Jete en Tournan bent over. The score for the exercise is 24,700.
Arina looked more confident in the ball practice. All risks, except the last one, were performed with three additional criteria — in a rotational motion, without the help of hands and without visual control. Kabayeva's turn turned out to be particularly spectacular. The estimate is 27,200.
One of the strongest performances in the qualification was the mace drill. The tango looked emotional. Arina caught the first risk literally at the edge of the court, and effectively completed the second catch with a rotational movement in the legs. The only mistake was an inaccuracy in the balance in the planchet: the athlete leaned too heavily on the clubs, which is why the element was not counted. The final score is 28,400 points.
The performance with the tape turned out to be the most stable. Arina cleanly executed a jump throw, bending over followed by a boomerang. The gymnast effectively completed her performance, catching the last risk in her legs. The score is 28,050. According to the sum of the four types, Kovshova scored 108,350 points and became the 14th, making it to the finals with clubs and ribbon.
The winner of the all-around was the representative of Germany Daria Varfolomeev, who scored 119,400 points. Sofia Raffaeli of Italy took the second place (113,050), and Tara Dragash, another host of the tournament, took the third place (112,700).
In the team competition, the first place was taken by the Brazilian national team, which performed both compositions accurately and scored 56.050 points. The two teams scored the same number of points — 55,850 each. However, according to an additional indicator, the performance score, the silver went to the group from China, and the bronze went to the Spanish gymnasts.
Finals: Kovshova Medal
The Russian gymnasts did not start in the hoop final. The winner of this event was Sofia Raffaeli, the host of the tournament, with 29.650 points. Taisiya Onofriychuk of Ukraine won silver (29,550). The bronze medal went to Takhmina Ikromova from Uzbekistan (29,150).
In the final, Maria Borisova performed cleaner with the ball than in the all-around. The gymnast got into musical accents better, there were fewer small steps and approaches to the subject. There were difficulties: in the third skill, a two-handed roll failed, and in the third skill, after turning in the planche, the ball bounced along the body, so the body difficulty was not counted. The score of 27,900 points brought the Russian fifth place. German gymnast Daria Varfolomeev won (28,950), Italian Tara Dragash won silver (28,600), and Cyprus representative Vera Tugolukova won bronze (28,200).
In the maces final, Arina Kovshova performed a clean lateral balance and a series of three jumps with a bent step. There was a slight inaccuracy in the skill without losing the object, and the gymnast performed the second risk without rotational movement, which reduced the cost. Arina took the sixth place with a score of 28,500 points. Varfolomeev became the best again with a record score of 31,000 points for the tournament. Silver went to Styliana Nikolova from Bulgaria (30,300). The third place was taken by Israeli Daniela Munitz (30,150).
The finale with the ribbon was less successful for Maria Borisova. The exercise started cleanly: the lateral balance coincided with the musical accent. However, then the gymnast lost an object outside the court while performing a risk and fell herself. Maria completed the exercise after the end of the music and received 24,200 points, becoming only the eighth.
But Arina Kovshova showed one of her best performances at the tournament in the final with a ribbon. Three turns in the planchet, accurate hitting of musical accents and clean catches of all risks allowed her to get 28,300 points and win the silver medal. Styliana Nikolova won (28,650), the bronze medalist was the representative of Uzbekistan Takhmina Ikromova (28,250).
Groups: Spain and China win finals
In the finals of the group exercises, the fight turned out to be no less intense. In the five—ball exercise, the Spanish national team won with 28.650 points, which was the highest score among the groups at the tournament. I especially remember the unusual performance of the fuete with a change of direction every two turns.
The Brazilian team won silver (27,500). The only loss occurred during the transfer. The third place was taken by representatives of the People's Republic of China (27,250), who made several inaccuracies in fishing in compositions to traditional Chinese music.
In the final with three hoops and two pairs of clubs, the Chinese national team took gold (28,100). The team showed pure lateral balance, jete en tournan and a very synchronized performance. The head coach of the Chinese group is Russian gymnast, Olympic champion Anastasia Bliznyuk.
The second place went to the Germans (27,300), especially impressive in their performance were the three shens at risk to cheerful music. Ukraine won the bronze medal (26,950): the team made several small out-of-sync errors, including a different number of somersaults among gymnasts and an inaccuracy in the fouette series.
In general, the Milan stage demonstrated that Russian gymnasts still lack stability. In the individual all-around, mistakes did not allow them to rise high, but the finals showed that the athletes are able to pull themselves together and fight to the end. Arina Kovshova won silver in the ribbon exercise, while Maria Borisova competed in two finals and tested herself at one of the most competitive starts of the season.
