Childhood and education

Nigel John Dermot Neill (actor's real name) was born on September 14, 1947 in Omagh, Northern Ireland. His father was a New Zealand Army officer who served in the UK. In 1954, the family moved to New Zealand, where the future artist spent his youth.

Neill graduated from Victoria University of Wellington, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. During his student years, he became interested in acting and changed his name from Nigel to Sam. Neill had citizenship of three countries: New Zealand, Great Britain and Ireland.

Sam Neill's creative career began in the 1970s with a job at the National Film Division of New Zealand. There he acted as a director and editor of documentaries.
