In Kaliningrad, customs officers discovered rare lizards worth over 5.5 million rubles, which they tried to illegally export to Poland. This was announced on July 13 by the press service of the Kaliningrad Regional Customs.

"Kaliningrad customs officers found 37 live lizards with a total value of over 5.5 million rubles. Rare reptiles were illegally transported to the Republic of Poland by a 64-year-old citizen of this country in a passenger car through the Mamonovo—2 checkpoint," said Ksenia Dzhumabekova, an employee of the Kaliningrad Regional Customs press service.

According to the expert examination, the lizards belong to the small belttail species, which is protected by the CITES Convention — the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. The size of the reptiles ranged from 15 to 20 cm.

According to Dzhumabekova, the man placed them two or three at a time in canvas bags, which were distributed among several sports bags found during a search inside the car. At the same time, the attacker did not have any accompanying documents for live goods. He explained that he transported lizards at the request of other people for money.

A criminal case has been opened on this fact under Part 1 of Article 226.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Smuggling of especially valuable wild animals"). The sanction of the article provides for up to five years in prison. At the moment, the reptiles have been temporarily housed in a specialized facility in compliance with the necessary conditions.

On July 10, the Federal Customs Service of Russia reported the discovery of 177 million rubles in cash during the baggage inspection of a passenger who was about to fly from Makhachkala to Bishkek. It was clarified that the man was trying to smuggle money in suitcases. During the interrogation, the Russian explained that he allegedly received funds from the sale of real estate by presenting a purchase agreement. The customs officers recognized the documents as fake.
