In China, the average service life of electric cars is less than two years — just 1.8 years. This was reported on July 12 by the China Press newspaper, citing a joint report by the Chinese Automobile Manufacturers Association and Hejun Consulting.

"The average age of new energy vehicles is only 1.8 years, such electric vehicles can be replaced as mobile phones," the article says.

It is noted that the frequent replacement of electric cars is explained by the rapid obsolescence of technology: cars released two or three years ago demonstrate a reduced power reserve, low charging efficiency and limited computing power.

In addition, for comparison, the newspaper cited data that passenger cars with an internal combustion engine are used for an average of 8.2 years, while almost 60% of such cars are older than seven years.

The day before, Bloomberg noted that at the beginning of July, the national load on the Chinese energy system reached a record 1.518 billion kW amid growing demand from the digital economy and electric transport. Electricity consumption by battery charging and replacement services increased by 56.8%.

In June, it was reported that by the end of May 2026, the share of Chinese cars in the European car market exceeded 10% for the first time.
