A new species of giant dinosaur, Mesetasaurus protector, has been discovered in Uruguay. This was announced on July 11 by the Republican University of Uruguay (Udelar).

The specialists of the university's science faculty presented the discovery to the journalists. The researchers analyzed the vertebrae of the animal, which were found by fishermen back in the 1980s in the department of Paisandou. The name of the new species refers to the "founding father" of the Uruguayan state, Jose Artigas.

"Experts have presented <...> a new species of dinosaur <...> which was named Mesetasaurus protector in honor of national hero Jose Artigas," reads a statement on the educational institution's website.

The publication clarifies that dinosaurs of this species lived in the north of modern Uruguay. The length of an adult reached 10 meters.

On May 29, paleontologists from Argentina and Japan discovered fossils of a previously unknown predatory dinosaur that lived about 66 million years ago in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz. The weight of the ancient lizard was about 27 kg.
