Spiegel learned about Germany's decision to close a military camp in Iraq after the withdrawal of US forces

The Bundeswehr will close a military field camp in Erbil, Iraq, by the end of September amid the withdrawal of the US military from the city. This was reported on July 10 by Der Spiegel magazine with reference to the command of the German Armed Forces.

"A rapid withdrawal of troops is needed, as the United States is also leaving the international camp in Erbil, and then the German field camp will no longer be protected, for example, by American Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems," the military said.

It is noted that in the coming weeks the German camp should be completely closed. Currently, due to a new round of escalation in the Middle East, there are only about 30 German soldiers at the military facility.

At the same time, the German military is hastily developing a plan on how to quickly complete the mission in Erbil and whether it is worth leaving something out of military equipment in order to speed up the withdrawal process. At the same time, the authors of the material specify that several military consultants will still remain in Erbil, but will be stationed at the base of the Consulate General of Germany in Iraq.
