China's car exports exceeded one million units for the first time
In June, 1,037 million cars were exported from China, which is 11.6% more than in the previous month and 75.1% more than a year earlier. This was reported on July 10 by the Chinese newspaper Economy Observer.
In the first half of 2026, the total volume of car exports from China reached 5,096 million units, which is 65.3% more than a year earlier, the Chinese Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) estimated.
These results significantly exceeded industry expectations, the Economy Observer notes. At the beginning of the year, CAAM predicted a total export volume of 7.4 million units for 2026, which represents a conservative increase of 4.3%. The Association noted that, despite the decline in sales in the domestic market, the export sector provided stable support to the industry.
Exports of new energy source vehicles (NEV) reached 523,000 units, 1.6 times more than a year earlier. For the first time, NEV accounted for more than 50% of total monthly exports, so every second car exported from China is now a hybrid or electric vehicle.
In the first half of the year, NEV exports totaled 2.355 million units, which is 1.2 times more than a year earlier and accounts for 46.2% of total car exports.
The main growth is observed in the ASEAN countries, the Middle East and Russia. Data from the International Organization of Automobile Manufacturers (OICA) shows that in the first five months of 2026, demand for cars increased by 35% in Vietnam, 15% in Thailand and 10% in Russia.
The SAM warns that factors such as EU carbon duties and anti-subsidy investigations may slow down export growth.
The Promrating agency reported on July 2 that the Chinese brand Geely became the leader in the number of recalled cars — 56.5 thousand units. In total, eight vehicle recall campaigns were conducted in Russia in the first half of 2026, which totaled 153.3 thousand vehicles.
