- The Italian Foreign Minister announced the expulsion of two military attaches of the Russian Embassy.
Two military attaches from the Russian Embassy in Rome will be expelled from Italy within three days. This was announced on July 9 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic Antonio Tajani.
"The Italian government has decided to expel two military attaches from the Russian Embassy in Italy...> [They] must leave Rome within three days," he said in a message on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
Tajani clarified that we are talking about two Russian diplomatic officials, Ivan Gorbachev and Mikhail Astakhov.
Austria declared three Russian diplomatic staff persona non grata in early May. It was noted that the reason for this was the "forest of antennas" on the roofs of the buildings they used, which could allegedly be used for espionage. For this, the diplomats were expelled from the country. At the same time, the Russian Embassy in Vienna called the relevant accusations unsubstantiated and outrageous.
