The EC announced the filing of a lawsuit against Hungary over food price restrictions

The European Commission (EC) has filed a lawsuit against Hungary demanding the lifting of restrictions on retail margins on food and pharmacy products, levied mainly from retailers who are not citizens of the country. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on July 8.

"Hungary mistakenly claims that the difference between the purchase price and the sale price is equal to the profit of the respective companies, not taking into account that they also have significant additional costs, such as staff costs, real estate and taxes," the publication reports.

The agency stressed that last year Hungary had already declared its readiness to challenge Brussels on this issue, regarding the 10% cap on retail margins for 30 basic foodstuffs introduced in March 2025 to combat inflation.

Since then, the Government has repeatedly extended the validity of these measures and expanded the range of products subject to restrictions.

Fernand Kartheiser, a member of the European Parliament from Luxembourg, noted on June 7 that in modern Europe there are not enough brave politicians of the level of former French President Charles de Gaulle or former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. He stressed that due to a lack of political courage, the current course of the European Union towards Russia is not being reviewed.
