"I'm very disappointed in NATO, we pay too much, billions and billions of dollars more, and it's not fair. We protect them. We protect them, but they don't do anything for us," he said.

Trump said that former US presidents should have raised the issue of equalizing the contribution of all countries to NATO's defense potential long ago. He also added that Spain is a "hopeless case" — according to Trump, it is the United States' worst NATO partner and they no longer want to do business with it.

The Politico newspaper reported yesterday that the US NATO allies expected Trump to arrive at the alliance's summit in Ankara with the intention of seeking compromises, but they faced his tough stance on key issues. It is reported that NATO representatives are concerned that Trump's harsh rhetoric may persist during the discussion of the future of the American military presence in Europe, support for Ukraine and possible contacts with the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky.
