After bathing in a pond, some people may experience unpleasant symptoms: frequent urination, pain, burning, and pain. Such signs often indicate the development of cystitis, an inflammation of the bladder. Olga Ulankina, an expert doctor at the Hemotest Laboratory, a gynecologist, told Izvestia on July 11 why a disease can occur after resting by the water and what measures will help reduce the risk of its occurrence.

The bathing season itself is not the cause of cystitis. In most cases, inflammation develops due to bacteria entering the urinary tract, most often E. coli. Under normal conditions, this microorganism lives in the intestine and does not pose a danger, however, if it enters the urethra and bladder, it can cause infection. The risk is especially high if the body's defenses are weakened or there are chronic diseases.

It is recreation near open reservoirs that sometimes creates an environment in which bacteria begin to actively multiply. Hypothermia becomes one of the main provoking factors. Prolonged exposure to cold water causes vasospasm, impairs blood supply to the mucous membranes and temporarily reduces the effectiveness of local immune protection.

"If the bacteria have already entered the urinary tract, it becomes more difficult for the body to control their reproduction. As a result, an inflammatory process may begin," the specialist noted.

Another common mistake after bathing is to stay in a wet swimsuit for a long time. Even in warm weather, this habit can increase the risk of developing cystitis.

"The problem is not only hypothermia. Under a damp cloth in the perineal area, conditions are created for the active reproduction of bacteria, the balance of the microflora of the external genital organs may be disrupted, which increases the likelihood of inflammation," Ulankina warned.

The first signs of cystitis usually appear within a few hours or days after exposure to provoking factors. A person begins to go to the toilet more often than usual, painful sensations, pain or burning occur when urinating. In some cases, the urine becomes cloudy or traces of blood appear in it.

When such symptoms occur, it is important not to delay contacting a doctor. The specialist will prescribe the necessary tests and select the treatment, which most often includes antibacterial therapy, and, if necessary, additional anti—inflammatory drugs. Taking medications on your own can lead to the disease becoming chronic or causing complications.

One of the most serious consequences of advanced cystitis is the spread of infection to the kidneys and the development of pyelonephritis.

"If high fever, chills, severe weakness or lower back pain are added to frequent and painful urination, it is necessary to seek medical help as soon as possible. Such symptoms may indicate that the infection has spread beyond the bladder," the doctor concluded.

Alexander Sysoev, oncourologist at SM Clinic, told Izvestia on March 14 that frequent cystitis and prostatitis, which many patients have been treating on their own for years, can increase the risk of developing bladder cancer. According to him, chronic infections can cause inflammation in the pelvic organs, which weakens the protection of the bladder and disrupts cellular renewal. In conditions of constant inflammation, the likelihood of malignant changes increases.
