Headphones with accumulated dirt can harm not only the skin, but also the health of the external auditory canal. Marina Soltanova, an otolaryngologist at the SM Clinic, told about this on July 7.

"earwax, skin particles, sweat, dust and various microorganisms gradually accumulate on the surface of the headphones. The warm and humid environment inside the ear canal creates favorable conditions for their reproduction. If there are microtrauma on the skin, the risk of inflammation increases significantly," the doctor explained in an interview withГазета.ги ".

The specialist clarified that one of the common causes of otitis externa — inflammation of the skin of the ear canal — is precisely the insufficiently clean headphones.

"The disease can manifest as pain, itching, a feeling of stuffy ear, discharge, and hearing loss. Especially often, such problems occur in the summer, when a person sweats more because of the heat, and also after bathing if moisture lingers in the ear canal," Soltanova noted.

In addition to bacterial infections, dirty headphones can cause otomycosis, a fungal lesion of the outer ear. It is characterized by severe itching, peeling, a feeling of fullness and general discomfort; however, therapy often lasts several weeks.

The doctor called the habit of sharing headphones with other people a separate problem.

"Together with them, bacteria and fungi can be transmitted, and in the presence of inflammatory diseases of the outer ear, the risk of infection increases significantly," the specialist emphasized.

To prevent inflammation, it is important to keep the headphones clean. Silicone ear pads should be washed in warm water using a mild soapy solution, and then thoroughly dried until completely dry before being used again. It is recommended to carefully treat the case with a cloth soaked in antiseptic, while making sure that moisture does not get inside the device.

Soltanova also cautioned that if a person notices pain, itching, discharge from the ear or hearing loss while wearing headphones, they should not continue to use them or try to clean the ear canal themselves with cotton swabs. In such a situation, it is better to consult an otorhinolaryngologist.

Julia Zabolotskaya, a gastroenterologist at SM Clinic, warned on July 6 that drinking coffee on an empty stomach could harm health. She recommended that people with gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer or hypersensitivity of the stomach be careful, as coffee on an empty stomach can increase heartburn, cause belching and a sour taste in their mouth.
