Happy Navy Day 2026: the history of the holiday and traditions

The holiday was established in 1939 on the initiative of the People's Commissar of the USSR Navy, Admiral of the Fleet Nikolai Kuznetsov. In modern Russia, its status is fixed by a presidential decree of 2006. Peter the Great laid the foundations of the Navy. Thanks to his reforms in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Russia became a great maritime power. In 1696, after the Azov campaigns, the Boyar Duma, at the suggestion of the tsar, decided: "To be naval vessels," which is considered the beginning of the history of the regular Russian fleet.

The modern date and format of the Navy Day were finally formed in 1980. The celebration begins with the solemn construction and raising of the St. Andrew's flag, the main symbol of the fleet. Parades of ships are held in cities with naval bases such as Sevastopol, St. Petersburg and Vladivostok. The best sailors are awarded, and the day ends with a festive fireworks display. Concerts, exhibitions and folk festivals are organized all over the country.

On this day, some ships are opened to the public, allowing guests to get to know their structure from the inside. There are also demonstrations and military sports competitions with the participation of sailors, marines and special forces. The festive atmosphere is complemented by performances by military bands and demonstration artillery and rocket firing.
