- Doctors talked about the impact of a sedentary lifestyle on the development of oncology
Prolonged sitting without breaks significantly increases the risk of developing cancer and worsens the prognosis of the disease. The danger persists even when playing sports. All the details are in the Izvestia article.
The effect of physical inactivity on the body
Oncologist, Chairman of the oncological council of JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic), PhD Ruslan Basanov said that a sedentary lifestyle directly affects the likelihood of death from cancer. Each extra hour of continuous sitting increases the risk of death by an average of 9-10%, and the likelihood of new tumors increases by about 3%. Physical inactivity triggers systemic changes such as obesity, chronic inflammation, and hormonal disruptions that damage the DNA of cells.
Blood poisoning due to lack of movement interferes with the normal functioning of the body. According to the expert, this reduces the delivery of oxygen to the tissues and slows down the immune system, which must destroy malignant cells. At the same time, regular workouts cannot fully compensate for the harm of 8-10 hours of computer work, since staying in one position for many hours remains an independent risk factor.
"Modern research shows that regular exercise cannot fully compensate for the harm of prolonged continuous sitting. Even if a person performs the recommended rate of physical activity (for example, 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week), staying in one position for many hours remains an independent risk factor," Ruslan Basanov said.
Changes in tissues and blood vessels
Kirill Antonov, senior instructor and methodologist at the Department of Physical Rehabilitation of JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), said that the body begins to react negatively to the lack of movement after 30-60 minutes. During this period, the activity of the muscles of the buttocks, thighs and lower back decreases, which slows down the circulation of blood and lymph. Prolonged flexion of the joints leads to shortening of the muscles and overstrain of the neck, and the lack of stress on the cartilages prevents their proper nutrition with synovial fluid.
With prolonged immobility, the metabolism changes and the activity of enzymes that utilize fats decreases. This provokes insulin resistance and hyperglycemia, creating a breeding ground for cancer cells. Also, lack of mobility disrupts circadian rhythms, which suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone with antitumor properties. Colon, breast, kidney, and pancreatic cancers are most often associated with this lifestyle.
Prevention of oncology
To minimize damage to health, experts recommend micro-breaks every 15-30 minutes. Even a five-minute pause after sitting for a long time can reduce the risk of death by 19%. Replacing one hour of immobility with a light walk reduces the likelihood of death by 12%. In the office, it is useful to perform simple exercises: squats, leg swings, head tilts and shoulder blades.
Kirill Antonov emphasized the benefits of short activities for body recovery. He advised combining different types of workload depending on the availability of free time during the working day.
"If you have 1-2 minutes, 10-20 quick squats or intensive walking along the corridor are better; if 5-10 minutes, go up the stairs or take a walk in the fresh air," the specialist said.
According to the expert, different types of short-term activity have different effects. Climbing stairs provides a higher load on the cardiovascular system and engages large muscle groups, including the quadriceps and buttocks, which helps improve metabolism. Walking helps activate the muscle pump, consumes calories moderately and allows you to switch psychologically. Squats, in turn, quickly load the muscles of the thighs and buttocks, maintain their tone and improve venous outflow.
